Maxim Gorki Theater

The Maxim Gorki, located close to the Brandenburg Gate and thus the former Berlin Wall, has a special place in the hearts of the former inhabitants of the GDR. In the dark days of the Cold War this small, cosy theatre was one of the few places where the communist regime was being criticised.

Nowadays the Gorki is one of the best theatres in the capital for modern plays. Everyone who wants to see challenging new work, that is not so intellectually heavy as in the Volksbühne, should visit this bare-bones (and not very well-maintained) venue.
