The flowing roof on the borders of the Spree river is one of the landmarks of the city. The building is a present from the Americans, and during the days of its construction was one of the finest examples of modern architecture.

In the eighties the architecture turned out to be too modern when the roof collapsed. Nowadays the completely renovated Haus der Kulturen der Welt (House of the World’s Cultures) is an exhibition space and the main hall plays host to conferences and other events.
